Women to Referee at Men's Asian Cup for First Time

In a groundbreaking move, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced that women match officials will make their debut at Asia's most prestigious men's national team competition, the Asian Cup. Yamashita, who was also selected for the 2022 men's World Cup in Qatar, is one of the five women chosen for the regional championship taking place in January-February. The tournament will also see the "full debut" of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. Expanding to include 24 teams for the first time, the Asian Cup will be hosted by reigning champions Qatar. Japan and South Korea, who reached the World Cup last 16 in Qatar, are also considered favorites. Additionally, the AFC revealed plans to launch an Asian women's Champions League next year.
