Spanish startup X1 Wind has achieved a major milestone with its floating wind turbine prototype generating 1 kWh of power off the coast of the Canary Islands. The X30 turbine, which is one-third the size of the final design, features PivotBuoy technology that aligns it with wind currents, a tension leg platform that reduces damage to sea floors and an underwater cable that feeds energy generation to the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands’ smart grid. X1 Wind plans to begin commercial production of its floating turbines, capable of generating 15 MW each, after testing is complete.
