Scientists Have a Vision for Sustainable, Biodegradable Glass

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Process Engineering have developed a new form of biodegradable, biorecyclable glass made from biologically derived amino acids. The new biomolecular glass is both impressively sustainable and recyclable, while also featuring many of the desired traits of standard glass products, including malleability and durability. Despite being far from large-scale commercialization, the breakthrough could provide a boost for other researchers looking to achieve similar goals, as the need for glass continues in various industries, including the production of solar panels.
