Jonathan the Tortoise: A Journey Through Time – Celebrating 191 Years

Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, a Seychelles giant tortoise, has just celebrated his 191st birthday, marking an incredible journey through time. Born around 1832, Jonathan has witnessed significant historical events, from the US civil war to the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Residing on the island of Saint Helena since 1882, he has become a national treasure, even featured on the local five pence coin. Despite being blind and lacking a sense of smell, Jonathan enjoys a healthy life roaming free in the grounds of the Governor's house. His longevity is a testament to his resilience and the care he receives, with his veterinarian hopeful he'll reach his third century. Jonathan's life, filled with history and personal milestones, including a 26-year partnership with another male tortoise, Frederica, showcases that age is no barrier to a full life.
