India is celebrating 50 years of "Project Tiger", which aims to promote conservation of the endangered species. India is now home to more than 70% of the world's tiger population, with approximately 3,000 tigers, and their numbers are increasing by 6% per year, according to government figures. Project Tiger was launched in 1973 by then-prime minister Indira Gandhi and initially covered nine reserves spread over 18,278 sq km. It now covers 53 reserves over 75,000 sq km (around 2.4% of the country’s geographical area).
