Since 2015, runners at the Boston Marathon have looked for a golden retriever named Spencer, who waved a "Boston Strong" flag. Spencer died earlier this year, but his legacy lived on during the 2023 marathon, thanks to a group of golden retrievers and their owners. MA Golden Meetups, a group that organizes events for golden retrievers, planned a walk to the iconic finish line on Boylston Street near Copley Square to honor Spencer. When Spencer died in February, the group's co-founder suggested a representation at the Boston Marathon, and the idea grew from there.
