Oregon has introduced its first battery-powered garbage truck, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, carbon-free future in waste collection. This innovative electric vehicle, with a 400-kilowatt-hour battery pack, has begun its journey in Portland, reducing the environmental impact of traditional diesel-powered trucks. Although the initial cost remains a hurdle, the benefits of electric trucks are undeniable: lower operational costs, reduced maintenance needs due to regenerative braking, and less noise pollution. With growing national interest and supportive funding, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, electric garbage trucks are set to become a common sight in U.S. cities, transforming the face of urban sanitation while addressing environmental and public health concerns.
