A Mexican Family Gives Up Fishing to Monitor and Rescue Sea Turtles

The Becerra family, formerly sea turtle hunters, now leads conservation efforts to protect sea turtles and other wildlife in Kino Bay, a small fishing community in northwestern Mexico. They formed the Kino Bay Turtle Group and use their boat to monitor turtles and rescue them from abandoned fishing gear. Their monitoring work focuses on the La Cruz Lagoon, a Ramsar site home to numerous protected species, including the endangered green sea turtle. The lagoon is threatened by shrimp farms that discharge effluent into its waters. The family has captured, documented, and released over 800 sea turtles.
