United Airlines has announced a joint venture to produce and commercialize sustainable aviation fuel using ethanol as a feedstock. The JV, called Blue Blade Energy, will invest up to $50 million and produce 135 million gallons of ethanol-based SAF annually. The goal is to reduce emissions in the aviation sector, which accounts for 3% of global CO2 emissions. The JV aims to begin construction of a pilot plant in 2024, with a full-scale facility set to begin operations by 2028.
