Love of Sea Turtles Turns Philippine Poachers Into Protectors

Writer's picture: Aryaman Sinha Aryaman Sinha

Former sea turtle poachers in the Philippines have been trained and incentivized to protect the animals, as all five species of sea turtles in the archipelago are endangered. Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA) has transformed poachers into allies, offering them incentives and training to help save the sea turtles and their eggs. Former poachers receive 20 pesos ($0.37) for each egg collected, which is four times more than what they would earn from selling them, and the eggs are then transferred to a hatchery for protected reburial.
